Great things happen in September. Fifty years ago, on September 28, 1976, one of the greatest fast-ballads to be penned was released to the radio. While the tune only reached number 36 on the Billboard charts, since then it’s rang around the world at weddings, celebrations, in movies, and in the hearts of people.
Today, the electric piano chords from the tune, Stevie Wonder’s “As” from the album Songs in the Key of Life, are ringing in my head – not just for their musical greatness, but for what lies beneath in the meaning and history.
In 1973, Stevie was riding in a vehicle on I-85 in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, when it collided with the back of a flatbed truck loaded with logs. While he survived the accident, recovery and navigating the work he loved were so difficult that he contemplated ending his career (even planning a farewell concert).
As the story goes, Stevie left America later that year. He visited Ghana, Africa, to help children and communities in need. That experience in service would change his mind and make history.
The song “As” was penned on that trip in the middle of a moment of service. While often thought of as a love song, its real meaning, Stevie shared in interviews, is about the beauty of humanity and the gift and responsibility it is to be together here with one another and serve.
According to Stevie in an interview with Gia Peppers of the Healed Girl Era Pod, “I was inspired to write those words [that say] that for all of the things you talk about, make sure that we are moving consistently in the right direction, for the good of all...”
Five Septembers ago, I signed on to do some of the greatest work of my life. Building and serving with all of you has been the most challenging, illuminating, and impactful work of my time on earth so far (this is the longest gig I have ever held). And, while there are no words for the amount of energy, sweat, and sacrifice that have gone into this, there are for how I feel and my wish for all as you continue to move this important work forward.
For those not familiar, a part of the song “As” says,
Just as time knew to move on since the beginning
And the seasons know exactly when to change
Just as kindness knows no shame
Know through all your joy and pain
That I'll be loving you always
As I move on from this founding role here at BCPI, know that I am leaving this phase with a lot of love and belief – Love and belief in you. Love and belief that this work matters for people and in cities. And, Love and belief that this place is necessary and in incredible hands.
As we say, “talk to you later,” keep in mind that I have one big request (which will show up in many small ways). My ask is that you do what you have seen me do since September of 2021: take good care of two of the most powerful forces on earth – innovators and the opportunity to drive local impact.
I need you to continue to ask “how” and not “if.” I need you to be mature and patient enough to “be right before you’re right.” I need you to support your leaders on our team and in cities as they do the brave work of shaping the unknown into impact. I need you to seek excellence with style. And, I need you to be consummate, kind professionals to each other and those you serve as you continue the work ahead.
Aggregately, you represent one of the greatest teams I have ever had the privilege to help build. You and your joy, intelligence, and commitment have made this an amazing experience, even on the rough days.
I am forever grateful to you for the opportunity to do this work. And know, I will be loving each of you and BCPI always.
